Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities Committee Meeting Minutes June 9, 2016 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 4:05 pm Commissioners Present Joann Fritsche, Todd Holloway, Krystal Monteros, Roxanne Miles, Devin Myers, Gerrit Nyland, Gary Peterson Commissioners Absent Luke Byram, Sheryl Ellis, Michael Maratas City Staff Present Sandy Davis, Donlisa Scott Guest Present Greg Kleiner, MDC, Ginger Peck, MDC Adoption of Agenda The agenda was accepted as presented. Acceptance of Minutes A motion was made, seconded, and carried to accept the COD meeting minutes of May 12, 2016. Public Comment There was no public comment. Reports Liaison Report – Sandy Davis Sandy Davis reported that Commissioners Nyland and Peterson’s appointments will expire and there will be three vacant positions on the Commission. To date, one application has been received and interviews are scheduled for August 25. HR Director Report Sandy Davis reported that Mark Lauzier, Assistant City Manager has secured Anita Gallagher to update the ADA Transition Plan. TACID Report – Nola Renz There was no report. Center for Independence (CFI) Report – Commissioner Holloway Commissioner Holloway reported that CFI hired two interns. The Roads to Community Living program is doing well. The Homestead Act anniversary celebration will be held this month. The Youth Workshop is scheduled in two weeks and interviews are being conducted for the program. Presentations Committee Reports Integrated Healthcare and Supported Employment Metropolitan Development Council (MDC), Gregory Kleiner, Vice-President for Healthcare and Ginger Peck, Director of Asset Building Gregory Kleiner and, Ginger Peck gave a presentation on their organization. MDC has a long history of cooperative planning with other social service agencies that include regional and state Coalitions for the Homeless, Pierce County Continuum of Care, Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, public/private schools and universities, community mental health and primary care clinics, and Veteran’s organizations. MDC is one of the lead agencies in the development and implementation of Pierce County's Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness and a lead agency in Project Homeless Connect. Effective Communications Committee Update – Commissioner Peterson Commissioner Peterson reported that the application for a booth at Ethnic Fest was submitted. They will continue to contact other organizations to volunteer for two-hour time frames. Disability Advocates Award – Commissioner Peterson The Effective Communication Committee recommended that COD join the City of Destiny Awards. The key points being that the City of Destiny Awards ceremony has more attendance and they have the funding for the award and webpage. Discussion ensued and it was agreed that due to the short time frame the two ceremonies would remain separate for 2016. The Effective Communications Committee will prepare a proposal for joining the 2017 City of Destiny Awards and present it to COD at a future meeting. Closed Captioning Ordinance – Chair Miles Chair Miles reported that she met with the Human Resource Director, Joy St. Germain as a follow up to the memo that was sent in May. Ms. St. Germain will meet with the City Manager to review our request, and then provide an update on the next steps and who on the City staff will be the point of contact for working on a resolution or ordinance. Community Outreach – Commissioner Peterson Commissioner Peterson reported that they have met with four of the eight councils. Commissioner Holloway shared that President Obama recently made a statement that he supports increasing retirement benefits which is a reversal from his previous position.
